General description on using this system and the example files available below:

 
Note: No data uploaded are maintained in this web site's upload system.   If you choose to upload a file, your data is uploaded and captured in the server's memory only during an active session for which it can be analyzed.  It is not saved and is destroyed once a session ends (that is, you close your browser).

Note:  If you are using an IOS device, (IPhone/IPAD), the only browser that appears to supports the "close-window" features that are required in uploading data is the google CHROME browser.
 

Terminology used for these examples

Forms: A page or pages that are used to collect data from users.
Tables: All data records into which responses have been recorded into a file for a specific form.
Fields: A name that represents a column for a specific response such as the diastolic blood pressure measured for a user.
Records (rows); All fields that were collected on an individual and recorded in one or more rows of the data table..
Dictionary: A dictionary is a file(s) that is used to describe the data collected.  Dictionary files are not required but are useful to make the statistical results produced by this system easier to interpret.  They can only be provided using the Excel upload process.  For this system, a dictionary file contains three types of tables:
1. "Form Names" - This table is used to describe the forms that were used to collect the data.  For example, a study may have a baseline demographics form into which all demograpics data were record and another form into which all basline lab results were recorded.
2. "Dictionary" - This table in the dictionary file is used to describe the characteristics of each field for which data were collected.  This  includes the type of data (integer, real, character, etc), the type of field, e.g. (categorical such as "yes/no:" responses or continuous data such as blood prssure mesurements or lab values) and other information needed about the properties of a specific field.  
3.  "Value Labels" - The table that indicates the coded responses that each categorical variable may have.  For example,a variable for education may contain responses such as 1=Less than High School; 2=High School graduated, 3= Some college; 4= College graduate. 
Data files: The file(s) that contain your data as described above.   For Excel files (workbooks), the worksheet names are used for the data table names.  The column names in your wooksheet(s) are used for the field names.  For delimited files, the first record must contain the field names and all data for all patients in the subsequent records
   

Examples Overview:

Obviously, the preferred method of providing data to a system such as this is to have the information available in an SQL server which can be managed on the server by multiple users.  However, that option is not available for this process because of cost considerations of using such a system and because of security reason in that there is no desire to keep copies of anyone's data since this site is provided for public use.  This means that there are limitations on how much data can be uploaded and used in this sytem.

The example files provided contain four data tables for a fictious blood pressure study of 1000 patients.  The data are not real but provides examples of what a real study's data could look like.

Below are links to example files that can be used as aids for helping make your data available for use in this system.  There are three types of examples that are provided in this system. 
1. There is an Microsoft Access database maintained on the server's web site that includes both the dictionary files and four fictitious data tables in order to provide a demonstration of the resources available under this web-site without the user having to upload data.  However,  Access files are not available for uploading by a user as they require that the files be saved on the server disk which is not allowed for security reasons.
2. There are two Excel files (workbooks) provided containing the same data contained in the Access database.   One file (workbook) contains the three tables (worksheets) that make up an example dictionary.  The second Excel file includes the four example data tables for this fictiious blood pressure study of 1000 patients.
3. Also provided is an example comma delimited text file (CSV) which shows how delimited data can be uploaded and used in this system.  This file contains only one of the 4 data tables of the fictuious study of 1000 patients.  The first row of this file is the field names for each of the columns of data.  No dictionary file is provided at this time for delimited files but dictionary files are not required to us this sytem. 
   

The preferred file format for uploading is Excel since as it provides a way to upload multiple data tables in different sheets that can be used for analysis and also a dictionary that can be used to describe the respective data.

How to use this system:

Download the sample files and save to a temporary folder.  Select one of the statistical options available in the "Statistics" left menu.  Select the "Load Data" button.  To use the data from the server-side Access database without uploading, select the "Use sample data".  To test the upload of Excel files, choose the "Load Excel Data files" and then upload the two sample Excel files provided above.  To test the upload of a delimited (CSV) file, select that option and upload the sample file downloaded from above.

Once you are confortable with this process, you can then create and upload your own data files and use this system.
